Born and brought up in Cheshire, Ian studied Painting at the Royal Academy Schools in London where he was taught by Peter Greenham RA, Mike Upton, Roderick Barrett and a number of visiting Royal Academicians. While there he won the Creswick Prize for Landscape (RA Silver Medal) and a David Murray studentship, again for landscape.

Having maintained his practice during his career teaching, Ian is now painting full-time again. Although principally a landscape painter, working in oils, watercolour and pastel, Ian is an experienced practitioner in most 2D media, including digital media.

Ian has exhibited in Cork Street, at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and in the Discerning Eye exhibition
